Leaked documents indicate that Canada plans to implement a number of new marijuana laws later this month.
As per Stratcann, This has led to the leakage of unofficial Orders of Council and the introduction of new rules for packaging, license limits, production standards, and research.
Documents that have circulated online since 5 March and will be included in the Gazette II bi-monthly update, due to be released on 12 March, suggest cannabis products may soon be packaged in transparent containers, so customers can see the products prior to purchasing them for the first.
Packaging will have more flexibility, allowing multi-packs to be used and for additional colours. It’s a big change from previous rigidity in labelling.
Producers can also now add multiple barcodes to packaging and insert leaflets inside the containers for additional product information.
Micro cultivators and processors in other countries could be allowed to significantly increase production.
As a result, micro-cultivators are now allowed to grow up 800 sq m canopy, fourfold the previous limit. Meanwhile, for micro-processors, production will be capped at 2,400 kg annually, up from 600 kg.
The cannabis nurseries that were limited to a 50-square-meter flowering area and storing 5 kilograms of dried flowers on site can now expand up to 200-square meters and hold 20 kilograms of dried flowers.
The rules have been updated to simplify the cannabis destruction protocol for producers licensed with the state. Instead of having to provide two witnesses, they now only need one.
Cannabis pollen is now officially recognized by federal law, and can be purchased or sold to breeders for purposes other than internal cultivation.
Researchers will no longer have to worry about compliance issues when conducting cannabis-related research on nonhuman animals and plants.
Licensed cannabis growers will also have more control over Quality Assurance. They can appoint alternate Quality Assurance persons when needed.
