Marijuana Minute reports that Missouri’s House Committee on Veterans and Armed Forces voted by a margin of 20-0 for a measure to set up clinical trials for PTSD and similar conditions.
This is the third time in a year that legislators are considering the medical program for psilocybin, which advocates say will benefit veterans. While the House has approved a previous reform proposal, the Senate never took it into consideration.
State Rep. Michael Johnson (D) — a veteran who served in Operation Desert Storm — spoke in favor of the reforms during a hearing last week.
I wish it was around then, or that we had known more back then. Because of the negative effects the war caused to many of my comrades. Others have committed suicide because they did not have the opportunity to experience something similar. — Johnson, during a hearing on Monday, via the Missouri Independent
The report states that participants would be required to have a minimum age of 21 as well as a diagnosis of post-traumatic-stress disorder (PTSD), major depression disorder, substance-use disorder or need end-oflife care. The only patients who would be shielded from drug possession charges are those participating in the clinical trial. Patients would receive approvals that would last a year. Participants would also be allowed a maximum 150 milligrams psilocybin each year.
According to the report, the bill calls on the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (DHS) to invest $2 million in research into the “use and effectiveness of psilocybin.”
