Connecticut marijuana sales are weaker than neighboring markets, according to a report by MEDCAN24

Connecticut lawmakers have officially declared that their state is the least expensive and has the poorest per capita record of cannabis sales when compared with three New England states. Connecticut’s total sales in 2024, which was the first year that recreational marijuana sales were allowed, also fell significantly. They went from $274,000,000 to just $199.9,000,000.

According to a Connecticut Office of Legislative Research report comparing the Connecticut marijuana markets’ prices and performances to Maine, Massachusetts, and New Jersey, officials in New York, Rhode Island, Vermont, or both, either did not share data with Connecticut, or failed to respond.

The OLR found that in December of last year a legal gram of cannabis cost $10.62, while it cost $4.44 in Massachusetts. The cost of a gram in Maine is $7.09, while in New Jersey it’s $9.93.

Report found that Connecticut had per capita retail sales just $54.40 in August, while Massachusetts saw sales of $233.16.

Rhode Island, with the lowest sales overall, still had an $84.59 per capita higher rate in sales.

Connecticut falls in between the other three New England states when it comes to total cannabis sales. Connecticut sold a little under $200 Million in legal marijuana last year. Rhode Island was the lowest selling state, with only $94,000,000 sold. Maine had $243.9 millions sold, Massachusetts $1.65 billion sold, and New Jersey $957.7 million sold, found OLR.

The Office of Cannabis Management of New York also reports that New York’s dispensaries are expected to sell $856,3 million by the year 2024.
