Australia’s medical marijuana market is the top destination for medical cannabis imports from other nations. Cannamonitor’s cannabis data shows that Australia’s cannabis medical industry imported an unprecedented amount of products, totaling over 81 tonnes, in 2025. Cannamonitor released a chart this week that contains historical import data.
Over 55 tonnes of Australian-grown medical cannabis were produced in addition to the imported cannabis. Not all of the 136 tonnes of cannabis medical that were produced in Australia reached patients. Cannamonitor believes that only 63.3 tonnes medical cannabis reached patients. Australia, however, exported 6.8 tonnes by 2025.
“Canada shipped 21% fewer flowers to Australia by 2025. The number of shipments dropped from 62.1t per year to 49.1t. However, imports hit a new record. Thailand’s share of the global market increased from 1.1t (a quarter) to 20.7t (a quarter), with South Africa, New Zealand, and Colombia having smaller positions. Cannamonitor said in an email blast.
Consider that Germany, the largest medical marijuana importer in the world, imported approximately 205 tons of medical cannabis from foreign countries in 2025.
In Australia, a survey conducted late last year revealed that the majority of people are in favor of integrating medical cannabis to mainstream healthcare. The survey found that 64% respondents support this.
