Marijuana Moment has reported that Massachusetts officials confirmed that in November voters will be presented with a ballot measure seeking to reverse the legalization of cannabis for adult use.
Last week, the Elections Division of the Commonwealth’s Secretary’s Office informed organizers that they submitted 12,551 signatures in the second round of the petition. This was just enough to meet the requirement of 12,429 signatures for the state election ballot on November 3, 2026. Massachusetts’ ballot campaign law requires signatures to be submitted in two stages. The Legislature is given the opportunity to adopt proposed measures following the first round. In May, lawmakers declined to take action on the cannabis initiative.
The measure, if approved by the voters would repeal the laws that allow regulated sales of adult-use marijuana and home cultivation. However, it will leave intact the legal possession program and state medical cannabis program. The proposal has been opposed by a coalition that includes cannabis industry leaders, health professionals and advocacy groups.
Coalition for a Healthy Massachusetts – the campaign for repealing the measure – fired a signator before after a video emerged that appeared to show the individual using misleading arguments in collecting signatures for Massachusetts’ initiative as well as a Maine similar proposal. The Coalition for a Healthy Massachusetts campaign has said that it will not tolerate misleading distribution tactics.
Cannabis advocates had contested the Massachusetts proposal based on alleged misleading signature gathering tactics, non-related topics, and a allegedly inadequate official summary. But their challenge was denied by both the State Ballot Law Commission as well as the state Supreme Judicial Court. Cannabis businesses in Massachusetts have filed a second challenge against the repeal after last week’s ruling.
