More Than 1 In 10 Americans Have Used CBD Within The Last Month, according to an Analysis Of Federal Data by MEDCAN24

A recent study on cannabidiol (CBD) usage reveals that more than 1 in 10 Americans reported ingesting this non-psychoactive component within the last month – with these figures increasing substantially among users who also partake of cannabis directly.
Research published earlier this month in Preventative Medicine Reports draws upon data collected in 2022 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), an annual federal survey supported by SAMHSA that asks Americans 12 or over about drug use, treatment options available, mental health concerns and related matters.
Ji-Yeun Park of Biola University in California conducted an analysis on this data that revealed 40.7 percent of recent marijuana users also used CBD within that same time frame; 32.2 percent used it within that same month; 19-1 percent reported ever having tried marijuana reported being past month CBD consumers.
Rates among people who had not used marijuana were far lower, the study reports: non-current users made up 5.09 %, non-past year users made up 4.38 % and never users 5.09 % of all respondents; overall 10.5 percent reported having used CBD within 30 days.”
Cannabis use was by far the biggest predictor of CBD usage; however, other variables also play a part in it; women, white people, adults and those reporting fair or poor health conditions were all more likely than their counterparts to use CBD products.
This new report raises a variety of health issues surrounding its findings, noting studies suggesting CBD use could lead to higher marijuana intake as well as significant drug interactions if used together with CBD products.
At the same time, this study suggests people may use CBD products both therapeutically and as an alternative to marijuana use. As such, public health initiatives to “address co-use of CBD and marijuana” as well as to raise public awareness regarding both benefits and risks related to CBD usage are needed – especially regarding potential side-effects when used alongside marijuana use.
“It remains unknown whether people who use marijuana consume CBD to replace or supplement its effects, treat medical conditions or simply enhance recreational effects,” according to a recent report. Therefore, further study may help uncover and understand why individuals co-consume marijuana and CBD together.
Park’s research represents one of the first efforts ever conducted that examines CBD use prevalence among the general American population as well as any correlations with marijuana status and demographic variables.
CBD cannabinoids have become much more widely utilized since hemp’s legalization through the federal 2018 Farm Bill. Unfortunately, however, Congress plans to resume working on new iterations of this bill; certain members could seek new restrictions for CBD production in crop form.
Senate Democrats released their agriculture bill text last November with several provisions intended to amend federal hemp laws–such as amending how THC legal limits are measured, and decreasing regulatory barriers faced by farmers who grow hemp for grains or fiber production.
Certain stakeholders are alarmed that part of the goal of legislation is to “eliminate an array of products currently offered for sale on the market”.
In May, House Republicans released their draft version of an agriculture legislation bill which could eliminate regulatory obstacles for certain hemp farmers and loosen restrictions that barred people with prior drug felonies from participating.
House Agriculture Committee amendment would remove cannabinoids created outside of plants from legal hemp definition, supporting both prohibitionists as well as cannabis businesses who see this restriction as necessary to address “loopholes” within 2018 Farm Bill.
CRS reported in June that hemp provisions included in that spending bill could “create confusion” for industry due to lack of clarity around type of allowable products.
As demand for hemp-derived CBD products continues to expand, DoorDash announced last month that they’re expanding their offerings in certain states to include THC and CBD gummies and beverages derived from hemp-grown sources such as cannabis.
As for CBD’s potential role as an alternative drug treatment, an article published late last year reported that one 800-milligram dose could help manage certain alcohol cravings among those diagnosed with alcohol use disorder (AUD), suggesting its use as potential therapy option for problem drinkers.
Separate plans funded by grants from the National Institute on Drug Abuse will seek to explore whether hemp-derived CBD may provide an offramp for people struggling with marijuana use disorder, potentially helping them cut back on THC consumption and limit future episodes of dependence.
Authors of a recently released plan from University of Colorado Boulder and Denver note that CBD does not cause intoxicating effects and poses minimal abuse liabilities among cannabis users, unlike THC. Furthermore, past research indicates it could help alleviate heroin-seeking behavior, cravings and anxiety caused by opioid dependence.
Studies published by the Journal of Dental Research in 2023 demonstrated that pure CBD could effectively relieve acute dental discomfort as effectively as common opioid products used in dentistry.
Study Results From 2017
A 2017 study concluded that legalizing CBD sales led to significant decreases in opioid prescription rates — between 6.6%- 8.1% less – with people purchasing legal CBD from online vendors significantly cutting opioid prescribing rates by between 6.6%-8.1%.
