Nebraska’s General Affairs Committee, which is part of the Nebraska Legislature, voted against an initiative to regulate and implement medical marijuana in the state earlier this year. Nebraska Examiner reports. Reports. The following are approved by the government: The November election was a success for 67% of the voters.
Ben Hansen of the State Senate (R), the legislator who proposed the legislation, said to the Independent newspaper that it was a “must” in order to stop the Wild West. The commission set up by the voters to oversee medical marijuana has no funding or power without a regulation bill.
Hansen to the Independent: “I’m not going to close all of the doors, but they are closing quickly, so we need to act.” — Hansen to the Independent
Hansen was approached by the committee to try and negotiate a compromise that would regulate cannabis using the state’s prescription drug tracking system, in addition to the existing seed-to-sale trackers. This would limit the list of medical cannabis qualifying ailments to only 15 conditions. This amendment wasn’t accepted.
Crista Eggers is the executive director for Nebraskans For Medical Marijuana. She told The Independent, “The rejection will not be the final end.” Advocates “have every intention of continuing to fight.”
