WMUR reported that the New Hampshire Senate voted on Thursday 12-10 to introduce a cannabis legalization measure approved by the House. This move signals the probable defeat of New Hampshire’s adult-use marijuana legislative efforts, even though the House has passed two legalization bills this year.
Senate Majority leader Regina Birdsell, R. stated that Republican legislators voted against the bill because of Gov. Kelly Ayotte is against cannabis reforms.
“The Governor will veto every cannabis bill she receives.” — Birdsell, in the report
New Hampshire House passed a first bill legalizing cannabis in the state this year. Then, several weeks after that, it approved a second one. This second proposal had more restrictions than the first, and excluded cannabis home-growing, retail, and all other forms of cultivation. However, the moderated reforms were still considered too radical by Republican state senators.
The House and Senate passed separate legalization bills in the past, but they were never able combine them into a single law.
A poll conducted last summer revealed that 66% of New Hampshire’s residents were in favor.Supporting the adult use of cannabis is either “strongly” “somewhat”.Â
