Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt’s (R) letter from Monday stated that intoxicating hemp-based products are a risk to public safety. He called for state officials and the federal government to work together to impose restrictions.
Reports said that the letter was sent to Tricia Everest (Secretary of Public Safety), Donnie Anderson (Director of Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs Control), Adria Berry (Executive Director of Oklahoma Medical Marijuana Authority) and Tim Tipton as Commissioner of Public Safety. It also addressed Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation director Greg Mashburn.
The governor highlighted several psychoactive cannabinoids that can be derived from industrial hemp in the letter — including delta-8 THC, delta-10 THC, tetrahydrocannabinol-O acetate (THC-O) — and called on the officials and their respective agencies to “work together to identify and investigate the presence of [the compounds] “As appropriate for your agency, you may take actions within your own jurisdiction.”
Oklahomans’ safety and wellbeing are threatened by these compounds. They often target young people. To address this new threat, we must work together and act swiftly. We also need to hold both legal and illegal market participants accountable. — Gov. Stitt in the letter
Governor’s comments follow two years of decline for Oklahoma’s medical marijuana industry, after legislators set a 2022 moratorium on new licenses. In a December report, it was found that Oklahoma’s cannabis industry had shrunk by a quarter in the year prior.
