On Friday, the Rhode Island Cannabis Control Commission voted to approve final rules for medical cannabis and adult use marijuana industries in Rhode Island. Regulations will be submitted by officials to the secretary of state’s office and take effect from May 1, 2020. According to the new regulations, CCC has complete regulatory control in Rhode Island over medical cannabis and adult use.
At present, the Office of Cannabis Regulation of Department of Business Regulation oversees the medical program. This agency will, according to CCC, be transformed into the Cannabis Office. It will oversee the daily operations of the Rhode Island cannabis industry.
According to the officials, 381 comments from public commenters helped them make their final decisions on regulations that cover all aspects of cannabis, including:
- Licensing
- Cultivation for personal and medical purposes

These finalized regulations are a reflection of the administration’s dedication to making sure that Rhode Island cannabis supervision is transparent, safe and fair. “I’m thankful to the members of the commission, industry leaders and stakeholders whose collaborative efforts helped create a thoughtful, strong regulatory framework for Rhode Island.” — Gov. CCC Chair Kim Ahern has said that new rules represent “our collective commitment to regulation our rapidly growing cannabis industry, in a safe, transparent and equitable manner.”

Rhode Island launched its adult-use marijuana industry in 2022. During the first legal year, the licensed operators sold more than $100 million in cannabis.
