The Tennessean has reported that the Tennessee Senate passed legislation on Thursday prohibiting the sale of products derived from hemp.
This bill passed in the House this week and limits the total amount and potential of THC that can be found in hemp-based products. It is expected to have a major impact on the hemp industry in California. Sponsored by state Sen. Richard Briggs (R), the bill was opposed by Democrats and some Republicans, but lawmakers ultimately approved the proposal, sending it to Republican Gov. Bill Lee to consider.
Briggs described the hemp business in Tennessee as “unregulated recreational marijuana”, saying that “it’s wild west.”
Kerry Roberts of the Republican Party, however, said that, because this proposal would restrict hemp derivatives more severely than federal law does, it might confuse hemp entrepreneurs and farmers, and cause legal problems.
“I’ve got farmers that have come to me and said ‘this is going to hurt us.’ We’ve got retailers that have come to us and said ‘this is going to hurt us.’ “Everyone keeps returning to the same point: If only they could define the law according to federal codes, they’d live with that.” — Roberts, via The Tennessean
There is no certainty that the Governor will make the law. Gov. Lee however has not vetoed one bill since the beginning of his tenure.
