Reuters reported that Thailand’s government officials have decided to recriminalise cannabis, three years after it was decriminalized. This decision threatens the $1 billion marijuana industry, which has grown since reforms.
Thailand became the first nation in Asia to decriminalize cannabis. However, critics have claimed that there was a lack of regulation. On Monday, Health Minister Somsak thepsutin issued the order. The new policy prohibits the sale of marijuana products without a prescription.
In the future, cannabis will be classified under the narcotics category. — Somsak, in a statement
According to the report, after the Royal Gazette has published the new rule change it will come into effect.
According to an opinion survey conducted in 2024 by Thailand’s National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA), 75% of Thais support the government’s plan to list cannabis again as a drug.
The policy change has been a stated priority of the ruling Pheu Thai Party — which previously had vowed to recriminalize the drug — but its members were held back by their former coalition partner, the Bhumjaithai Party, the Associated Press reports. Bhumjaithai Party, on the other hand, recently left the coalition due to fallout over a phone conversation between former Cambodian leader Paetongtarn Shinawatra, Prime Minister, and Paetongtarn Shinawatra.
