CNN reported that despite President Trump’s (R) previous support of rescheduling marijuana at federal level, “no actions are being considered right now” is the message from the second Trump Administration on cannabis policy. A White House official was said to have made the statement.
Since taking office, the White House has been silent about the marijuana issue. It issued an official document last month that criticized Washington D.C.’s decriminalization of cannabis as causing “disorder”.
The report states that a political action committee (PAC) promoting cannabis, called American Rights and Reform PAC, plans to spend more than $1 million in advertisements for marijuana near the White House and President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Resort, with the hope of influencing him to reform. Also, two of the President’s favourite talking points will be featured in the advertisements, including
- Disparaging previous Biden administration’s achievements (noting that Biden did not fulfill his campaign promise to implement significant cannabis reforms),
- Claiming that Canada profits from U.S. marijuana prohibitions by allowing American companies to be listed publicly on its stock markets.
During the last election, President Obama said that he was in favor of federal cannabis rescheduling and would support Florida’s amendment to legalize adult use marijuana.
A Pew Research survey released in 2013 found that despite federal laws prohibiting cannabis, nearly 90% of Americans supported legalizing it (if not recreationally, at least for medical purposes).
