Florida voters will be preparing to vote in the forthcoming gubernatorial race. Florida cannabis policy The details have been given. Ganjapreneur reported, citing Florida Phoenix that, except for one candidate, every major governor’s race opposes reforms for adult-use cannabis, setting the direction of future state regulation.

A 2024 question on adult-use marijuana legalization, while receiving a large majority of votes in Florida, did not reach the required 60% vote threshold to become a constitutional change. The subsequent efforts to pass a ballot initiative in 2026 also met with setbacks. State officials invalidated thousands of signatures submitted under the new policy, and this decision was upheld by Florida’s Supreme Court.

Candidates for Governor detail their positions on cannabis policy

Candidates’ positions show a conservative approach in expanding access to cannabis beyond existing medical frameworks. Voters and stakeholders continue to discuss the Florida cannabis policy.

  • David Jolly: He is now running for Democrat in Florida as a former Republican Florida representative. The latter supports legalizing marijuana use by adults. He bases his support on the assumption that in 2024, a majority Floridians voted for legalization.
  • Byron Donalds (Republican): Donalds, an incumbent Florida Representative who spoke at a political event in support of reforms against adult-use marijuana, said that he was not a fan. Although he was satisfied with the regulatory system in place for medical use, Donalds expressed that he does not support reforms. Donalds admitted in the report to possessing low levels of cannabis and selling small amounts as a teenager.
  • James Fishback, Republican This Republican candidate supports the patient’s access if they have a valid medical reason, specifically by mentioning U.S. Veterans.
  • Jay Collins (Republican Party) In a post on Facebook, the current Lieutenant Governor said he’s “totally against” legalizing cannabis. He cited concerns regarding its effects in other states.
  • Paul Renner (Republican): Former House Speaker Ron DeSantis expressed his opposition last week to the “full blown” recreational marijuana. He said that he’d campaign against it again if this was on the ballot.

The context of failed adult-use legalization efforts

Recent Florida legislative and judiciary decisions have helped to shape the political climate surrounding adult-use marijuana. The 2024 question did not receive the supermajority needed for constitutional amendments, even though it was supported by a majority.

The campaign to put a question about adult cannabis use on the ballot in 2026 also faced significant obstacles. Florida officials decided in February that there were not enough valid signatures to support the campaign. The decision was appealed by the Florida Supreme Court which sided with the officials in regards to invalidating thousands of signatures. Many of these were rejected due to new policies introduced by Governor Ron DeSantis.

Florida Medical Cannabis Market: Implications

According to the majority of gubernatorial candidate’s opposition towards adult-use cannabis reforms, the Florida marijuana regulation will most likely continue with the medical cannabis programs already in place. This indicates to operators and investors that the medical cannabis industry in Florida will remain stable under its existing regulations, as opposed to an expansion of the adult-use sector. Candidates’ focus on access to medical cannabis, especially for veterans, shows a commitment to therapeutic uses of cannabis under controlled parameters.
