Illinois marijuana sales in 2024 were just under $2 billion, a significant increase over the $1.96 million recorded in 2023.
Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation reports that adult-use cannabis retailers sold in Illinois $1.72 billion last year. The state’s medical dispensaries contributed another $285 millions, making the total $2.007 billion.
Although the increase wasn’t what some predicted, the fact that this market has continued to grow is noteworthy, especially as other mature cannabis markets experience sales slumps.
The recreational sales for December totaled $153.2 millions, and 4.5 million unit sales made this the best month in the entire year. Sales for medical marijuana were $23.4 millions, including $11.1 million of dry flower. Another $12.3 million was spent on concentrates and edibles.
In the first two years of its return in 2020, sales grew from $669 to $1,3 billion, then $1.5 to $1.6 in 2022 and $1.6 to $1.6 in 2023.
During this time, however, the medical market has shrunk steadily. Sales were $324.7 in 2023. They were $353.6 in 2022. And $397.2 in 2021.
